Now here is a Victorian gentleman I am sure most of you heard of - although you may not know his face.
Perhaps this may give you a clue:
Yes, it's a wallpaper design - by William Morris (1834 - ), who was a pioneer of the Arts and Crafts Movement.
But he did a lot more than develop techniques for tapestry weaving, dyeing, carpet-making, wood-block printing and embroidery.
He was a founder of the socialist movement in Britain and a writer of fiction.
But today we are considering him as a poet.
There are more than 50 of his poems readily available online and I have chosen this one as being representative of his style.
LOVE IS ENOUGH
Love is enough: though the World be a-waning,
And the woods have no voice but the voice of complaining,
Though the sky be too dark for dim eyes to discover
The gold-cups and daisies fair blooming thereunder,
Though the hills be held shadows, and the sea a dark wonder,
And this day draw a veil over all deeds pass'd over,
Yet their hands shall not tremble, their feet shall not falter;
The void shall not weary, the fear shall not alter
These lips and these eyes of the loved and the lover.
William Morris
